About the artist Russell Young

Young studied photography, film and graphic design at Chester Art
College and later attended Exeter Art College. He moved to London and
gained recognition photographing the music scene in the late 1970s,
including bands such as Bauhaus, REM and the Smiths. During this time he
also shot portraits of Morrissey, Bjork, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan,
New Order, Diana Ross and Paul Newman. In 1986 he created his first
music video, Faith, for singer George Michael, which would be followed
by over one hundred more during the heyday of MTV.
Starting in
September 2000, when Young was already living in New York, he
increasingly focussed on art and dedicated himself to painting. Among
his early work are the ‚Pig Portraits‘, life-size police mug shots of
celebrities (such as Steve McQueen, Elvis and Jane Fonda) on canvas. He
is best known, however, for his portraits of celebrities, such as a
weeping and vulnerable-looking Marilyn Monroe, lending them glamour even
after their deaths by means of enamel and diamond dust in a
screen-printing process.
The work of this British-American artist and his interpretation of pop art are both nationally and internationally acclaimed.
