Pressemitteilung – Die Doc Alliance Awards 2023 wurden heute Abend beim DokuFest in Prizren feierlich verliehen. Der Doc Alliance Award für den besten Langfilm, dotiert mit 5.000 Euro, ging an „Death of a City“ von João Rosas. Der Film begleitet den Abriss einer ehemaligen Druckerei im Zentrum von Lissabon, die neuen Luxuswohnungen weichen muss. Spürbar wird dabei die Beziehung des Regisseurs zu seiner Heimatstadt und den Menschen, die sie aufbauen. Die vielschichtige Erzählung aus persönlichen Geschichten von Arbeit und Migration rückt die Gewalt und Zerstörung in den Blick, die sich hinter dem Fortschritt großer Städte verbergen.
Die Jury lobte den Filmemacher „für ein intelligent politisiertes Werk und die lehrreiche Darstellung des Lebens der Protagonist*innen, eine scharfsinnige und bewegende Erkundung des modernen Europas.“
Der mit 3.000 Euro dotierte Doc Alliance Award für den besten Kurzfilm ging an „The Cervix Pass“ von Marie Bottois. Die Regisseurin bezieht sich darin auf die Gründung der MLAC (Bewegung für die Freiheit der Abtreibung und der Empfängnisverhütung) in Frankreich im Jahr 1973. Im Stil der kämpferischen und feministischen Filme der damaligen Zeit dokumentiert sie das Einsetzen eines Intrauterinpessars in ihren eigenen Körper.
Die Jury hob die Fähigkeit des Films hervor, „eine bewegende und spielerische Koexistenz zwischen Leben und Kino zu schaffen. Marie Bottois verbindet auf bemerkenswerte Weise politische und filmische Rigorosität, Mut und Humor, Frontalität und Feingefühl.“
Die Preisträger*innen wurden von drei Jurymitgliedern mit unterschiedlichen Expertisen in der Filmbranche bestimmt: dem Programmer und Kurator Jonathan Ali (Locarno Film Festival, Open City Docs, True/False Film Fest, Sheffield DocFest und Third Horizon Film Festival), Anna Berthollet (CEO, Sales & Acquisitions bei Lightdox) und Programmer Arnaud Hée (Bibliothèque publique d’information du Centre Pompidou).
Der lange Dokumentarfilm „Disturbed Earth“ von Kumjana Novakova und Guillermo Carreras Candi erhielt eine Lobende Erwähnung von der Jury. Der Film wurde nominiert von DokuFest, dem diesjährigen Gastfestival von Doc Alliance.

“Death of a City begins simply enough, as a diary of the real-estate boom of the filmmaker’s home city, Lisbon, in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Over the course of its almost two-hour runtime, however, this outstanding film patiently opens out to become a deeply felt chronicle not only of a changing city, but also of the migrant workers engaged in its construction, their hopes and dreams, and the communities they belong to. The jury commends João Rosas for an intelligently politicised work and its salutary portrayal of the lives of the people therein, an incisive and moving exploration of the face of modern Europe.“

Marie Bottois combines in a remarkable way political and cinematographic rigor, courage and humor, frontality and delicacy.“
